Gilly Smith

I'm a food journalist and an early adopter in British food podcasting; the delicious. podcast was the first to accompany a big food magazine in 2016. It was nominated for a Fortnum and Mason award in 2017, up against Radio 4 flagship shows The Food Programme and The Kitchen Cabinet.

I produce and present Cooking the Books with Gilly Smith, a weekly chat show with A lister food writers which was nominated for a Fortnum and Mason Award in 2022. The show is also nominated for the 2022 Guild of Food Writers Best Podcast Award.

I produce a variety of food podcasts including The Food Foundation’s Right2Food podcast, CEO of Compassion in World Farming, Philip Lymbery’s The Big Table podcast, the Borough Market Podcast. I edit the thought leader podcast What Next? with Rishad Tobaccowala, Chief Growth Officer at Publicis Group. I also produced and presented Leon’s How to Eat to Save the Planet which won a special commendation in the 2021 Guild of Food Writers Awards.

I coach podcasting both one-on-one and at retreats at my home in East Sussex.

Initially a radio and TV producer, I have written seventeen books including the award winning Taste and the TV Chef, and How to Start and Grow a Successful Podcast as well as biographies of Nigella Lawson and Jamie Oliver. I write mainly about the influence of culture of food in its various forms, as well as articles for the national press and academic journals, largely about food, philosophy and ethical travel.
