Julia Bell

Writer and educator. I have taught Creative Writing across the UK and internationally, and am the editor and author of the bestselling Creative Writing Coursebook (Macmillan). I have published novels, essays, short stories and poetry, in publications including the TLS, The Paris Review and The White Review, and have written for the BBC.
My latest book is Between the Lines (Simon & Schuster, 2026). I'm also the author of the book-length essay Radical Attention (Peninsula Press) — widely reviewed and named by Paula Hawkins as one of the five books that changed her life — which is being reissued in September 2026 with a new introduction by Grace Blakeley. My memoir in verse, Hymnal, was published by Parthian in 2024.
I live in London and teach at Birkbeck, and for other organisations including London Lit Lab, the Arvon Foundation and the Skyros Centre in Greece. I also coach and tutor writers privately, in the UK and internationally. Visit my website for links and further details.
