Growth Beneath the Surface

Introduction
I created an interactive self portrait showing growth beneath the surface.

Supplies
I used watercolor, an X-acto knife, a self-healing cutting mat, and artist's tape.

Sketching ideas
I sketched ideas for something with a lift flap and pull tab. I drew ideas for the top page, the pull tab, with all the levels of reveal, and the 'final reveal' once the pull tab is pulled all the way out. I thought about what elements do I want revealed, and in what order.

Prototyping
I made a smaller, simpler version, as a prototype- to plan layers, proportions, relationships, and functionality.

Painting and assembling layers
I painted my top page and then cut out the lift flap. I then cut out my pull tab and guide pieces. I put it all together temporarily, so I could sketch where my pull tab would be visible through my top page window. I then painted my pull tab, and final reveal on the guide, before re-assembling it all in the end.

Finished Piece!
I think I love how it all came together! Do you?

@gestao_joselito Thank you! 💚
Your interactive self-portrait is amazing! I love how it reveals the growth hidden beneath the surface. It reminds me a bit of solving puzzles—if anyone needs a fun challenge while reflecting on growth, check out https://blockblastsolve.net/ru
