La virgen indígena

La imagen femenina ancestral es un misterio profundo en nuestra sociedad actual. A lo largo de la historia, hemos venerado representaciones divinas: Vírgenes, Madonnas, figuras maternales sagradas que se repiten en distintas culturas. Pero, ¿dónde está la imagen de la mujer indígena?
Todas las “Marías” son bellas, sí, pero también similares entre sí, replicando un arquetipo universal que deja poco espacio a otras identidades.

Este proyecto nace de la necesidad de abrir una grieta en ese imaginario. Quise representar una historia no contada, una visión personal de una divinidad distinta, inspirada en mis raíces, en mis ancestras, en esa belleza oculta y poderosa que habita en la figura indígena. No sé si estas imágenes existen en lo tangible, pero viven en mi memoria, en mi intuición, en mi sangre.

Los invito a recorrer esta búsqueda visual, este intento de darle cuerpo y rostro a una mujer que, aunque olvidada por el canon, sigue siendo sagrada.

Introduction

The ancestral feminine image remains a deep mystery in our modern society. Throughout history, we've seen divine representations—Marys, Madonnas, sacred maternal figures across cultures. But where is the image of the Indigenous woman?
All these “Marys” are beautiful, yes—but they often look the same, repeating a universal archetype that leaves little room for other identities.

This project was born from the need to crack open that visual tradition. I wanted to represent an untold story—my personal vision of a different kind of divinity. One inspired by my ancestry, by images I’m not even sure are real, but which feel familiar—mysteriously beautiful and rooted in the spirit of Indigenous womanhood.

I invite you to join me on this visual journey: a search for the image of the Indigenous woman—forgotten by the canon, but still sacred.

Todo lo que usé en esta imagen fue creado con intención, creatividad y recursos accesibles y autogestión. La mayoría de los elementos fueron hechos a mano o improvisados con lo que tenía disponible, demostrando que la expresividad no depende del presupuesto, sino de la visión.
-Cámara:
Sony Alpha 58 (mi primera cámara), con lente estándar de 18–55 mm.
-Vestuario y elementos:
Peluca negra larga.
Tocado artesanal hecho con cable de aluminio, alambre de joyería y perlas.
Joyería personal: aros, collares y pulseras que uso a diario.
Incienso para crear el humo.
-Iluminación:
Aros de luz (3)-Lampara de mesa de luz-Foco led de exterior
Celofán rojo sobre una fuente de luz para crear el brillo cálido y dramático.
-Set
Fondo: Tela negra colocada estratégicamente para generar un fondo tipo “sin fin”.
Estudio: Un pequeño rincón de mi habitación, transformado en estudio fotográfico improvisado.

Software de edición:
Adobe Photoshop (ajustes generales de luz y color, recorte, correcciones, edición de fondo, reconstrucción de detalles del tocado, intensificación del humo y ajustes de color final).

Everything used in this image was created with intention, creativity, accessible resources, and self-management. Most of the elements were handmade or improvised with materials I already had, showing that expressiveness doesn't depend on budget, but on vision.
– Camera:
Sony Alpha 58 (my first camera), with a standard 18–55 mm lens.
– Wardrobe and elements:
Long black wig
Handmade headdress crafted with aluminum wire, jewelry wire, and pearls
Personal jewelry: earrings, necklaces, and bracelets I wear daily
Incense to create the smoke effect
– Lighting:
3 ring lights
One desk lamp
One outdoor LED spotlight
Red cellophane over one light source to create a warm and dramatic glow
– Set:
Background: Black fabric placed strategically to simulate an “infinity” backdrop
Studio: A small corner of my bedroom, transformed into an improvised photo studio
– Editing software:
Adobe Photoshop (general light and color adjustments, cropping, corrections, background editing, headdress detail reconstruction, smoke enhancement, and final color grading)

Esta obra nació de una búsqueda muy personal. Crecí en una familia católica, rodeada de imágenes sagradas, especialmente de vírgenes(Familia Matriarcal) le rendian cierto honor especial a la virgen María un refugio hacia sus propios problemas personales . Siempre me atrajo ese lenguaje visual, pero también me generaba preguntas: ¿por qué todas las vírgenes se ven iguales? ¿Dónde está la representación de nuestras raíces? ¿Cómo habría sido una figura sagrada en el contexto indígena latinoamericano?
En ese proceso de cuestionamiento existencial, la imagen de lo femenino ancestral comenzó a tomar forma en mi mente. Buscando referencias visuales en Pinterest y descubriendo historias de Virgenes y santas a lo largo del mundo , encontré inspiración y a la búsqueda de trabajos de otras y otros artistas visuales , que me impactó profundamente. Sus obra fue una respuesta visual poderosa a mis propias dudas, y fue el punto de partida para crear esta imagen.
A partir de ahí, desarrollé mi propia visión: una reinterpretación íntima, construida con mis materiales, mis símbolos y mi historia. Esta obra es libre de interpretación. No pretende dar respuestas, sino invitar a abrir nuevas preguntas sobre identidad, espiritualidad y representación.

Es un pequeño relato a como artista llegue a esta respuesta pero son libres de encontrar sus propios relatos.

Inspiration
This piece was born from a deeply personal search. I grew up in a Catholic family—a matriarchal one—surrounded by sacred images, especially of the Virgin Mary. For the women in my family, she was more than a symbol; she was a refuge, a spiritual comfort in the face of their personal struggles.
I was always drawn to that visual language, but it also stirred many questions in me: Why do all the Virgins look the same? Where is the representation of our roots? What would a sacred feminine figure look like in an Indigenous Latin American context?
As I explored these existential questions, the image of the ancestral feminine began to take shape in my mind. I searched through visual references on Pinterest, discovering stories of Virgins and female saints from around the world. In that search, I encountered the work of other visual artists—pieces that deeply impacted me and gave form to questions I had long carried inside. Their work offered a visual response that helped spark the creation of this project.
From that moment on, I began to shape my own vision: an intimate reinterpretation built with my hands, my materials, my symbols, and my story. This work is open to interpretation. It’s not here to provide answers, but to invite new questions—about identity, spirituality, and representation.

It’s a small account of how I, as an artist, arrived at this image—but you are free to find your own stories within it.

1. Inspiración
La imagen surge de una reflexión personal sobre la representación sagrada de lo femenino en el contexto latinoamericano. A través de recuerdos familiares, referencias religiosas y búsquedas visuales en plataformas como Pinterest, empecé a imaginar cómo sería una figura sagrada indígena. El trabajo de otros artistas también me ayudó a transformar esas dudas en una visión concreta.

I will now explain the step-by-step process:
1. Inspiration
The image emerged from a personal reflection on the sacred representation of the feminine within the Latin American context. Through family memories, religious references, and visual research on platforms like Pinterest, I began to imagine what an indigenous sacred figure might look like. The work of other artists also helped me turn those questions into a concrete vision.

Antes de producir la fotografía, realicé varios bocetos a mano. Dibujé el tocado, la pose, y el esquema de iluminación. Esta etapa fue clave para definir la composición y la atmósfera que quería transmitir. Visualicé también los colores predominantes y cómo se integraría el humo como elemento simbólico.

Before producing the photograph, I created several hand-drawn sketches.
I sketched the headdress, the pose, and the lighting setup. This stage was key in defining the composition and the atmosphere I wanted to convey. I also visualized the dominant colors and how the smoke would be integrated as a symbolic element.

Todos los elementos fueron hechos a mano o con materiales accesibles:
-El tocado fue construido la base con alambre f y forrado con cinta aislante negra, la parte de los inciensos esta sujetada con fomi moldeable y perlas, las joyas que caen del tocado son joyas mías el cual uso día a día y me pareció muy interesante como quedan los aros de argolla al final del las pulseras y collares.

All the elements were handmade or created using accessible materials:
– The base of the headdress was built with wire and wrapped in black electrical tape.
– The incense holders were attached using moldable foam and pearls.
– The hanging jewelry pieces are my own—accessories I wear daily. I found it especially interesting how the hoop earrings complemented the look at the ends of the bracelets and necklaces.

Transformé un rincón de mi habitación en un estudio improvisado:
-Usé una tela oscura como fondo, colocada para crear efecto de infinito.
-La iluminación se basó en 3 aros de luz caseros, uno a la izquierda otra a la derecha y otro de frente, los aros de los costados tenia una pantalla de celofán rojo; para el fondo se coloco una lampara de mesa de luz y una pantalla de celofán rojo esto da un destello rojo atrás de la silueta mía, que vendría a ser la modelo, además arriba de mi cabeza había un foto potente led de exterior.
-Trípode
Todo el set fue creado con lo que tenía disponible, buscando soluciones creativas.

I transformed a corner of my room into an improvised studio:
– I used a dark fabric as the background, positioned to create an infinite backdrop effect.
– The lighting setup was based on three homemade ring lights: one on the left, one on the right, and one in front. The side lights were covered with red cellophane sheets.
– For the background, I used a desk lamp with red cellophane to create a red glow behind my silhouette (as I am the model).
– Above my head, there was a powerful outdoor LED spotlight.
– A tripod was used to stabilize the camera.
The entire set was built with what I had on hand, finding creative solutions with limited resources.

Ya seca la masa del tocado, realice pruebas de calce y la preparación de la peluca
-Usé una peluca negra para reforzar el aspecto simbólico, un detalle a resaltar es que la peluca se decidió larga ya que se asimila al pelo usado por algunas tribus mexicanas y aztecas, además logra cubrir la zona del busto que hace que la foto sea mas suave y no haya riesgo de infracciones de censura en redes sociales.
-El humo proviene de incienso natural prendido al momento de la foto.
-Se utilizo uñas postizas, ya que da mas elegancia alas manos y además quería representar las garras a un ave, un símbolo de lucha.

Once the headdress base had dried, I tested the fit and prepared the wig:
– I used a long black wig to reinforce the symbolic aspect. The length was intentional, as it resembles the hair worn by some Mexican and Aztec tribes. It also helps cover the chest area, making the image softer and avoiding potential censorship issues on social media.
– The smoke comes from natural incense, lit at the moment of the photo.
– I used press-on nails to give the hands a more elegant appearance. Additionally, I wanted to evoke the idea of claws—like those of a bird—symbolizing strength and resistance.

Fue una sesión muy cuidada, buscando capturar el momento justo donde el humo, la mirada y la luz crearan una imagen poderosa. La paciencia fue clave.
En la elección de la fotografía no hay mucho que decir, ya que la imagen se asemeja mucho al boceto me centre en llevar esa idea.

It was a very carefully executed session, aiming to capture the precise moment where the smoke, the gaze, and the light would come together to create a powerful image. Patience was key.
There’s not much to say about the photo selection process, as the final image closely resembled my original sketch. I focused on bringing that vision to life.
The camera settings will be shown in the attached image.

Empecé ajustando exposición, sombras, luces y tonos generales.
Luego , trabajé por capas: recorte, corrección del fondo, reconstrucción de detalles en el tocado (algunas perlas fueron creadas digitalmente), ajustes finos de sombras y luz.
Retocando el rostro, suavicé el tono para equilibrar el color de piel. También reforcé los tonos rojos y trabajé el humo como elemento final.
Para terminar agregando una luz y sombra artificial con el objetivo de crear esta mística eclesiástica.

I began by adjusting exposure, shadows, highlights, and overall tones.
Then, I worked in layers: cutting out the subject, correcting the background, and reconstructing details in the headdress (some of the pearls were digitally recreated). I also made fine adjustments to shadows and lighting.
When retouching the face, I softened the skin tone to balance the overall complexion. I enhanced the red tones and treated the smoke as the final visual element.
To finish, I added artificial light and shadow to evoke a mystical, ecclesiastical atmosphere.

El resultado es una imagen íntima, simbólica y libre de interpretación.
No busca ofrecer respuestas, sino invitar a la reflexión sobre lo femenino, lo sagrado y lo ancestral.
A expandir los horizontes de lo que conocemos y a navegar en este océano de lo desconocido.

It doesn't aim to provide answers, but rather to invite reflection on the feminine, the sacred, and the ancestral.

Este proyecto no solo fue una fotografía, sino una experiencia de introspección, creación y reconexión con mis raíces. Fue un ejercicio de imaginar lo sagrado desde una mirada personal, usando mis manos, mi entorno y mis preguntas como herramientas.
Con esta imagen, no busco imponer un significado, sino invitar a mirar con otros ojos, a cuestionar lo establecido y a permitirnos imaginar nuevas formas de representación para lo femenino, lo espiritual y lo ancestral.

Conclusion
This project was more than just a photograph—it was an experience of introspection, creation, and reconnection with my roots. It became an exercise in imagining the sacred from a personal perspective, using my hands, my environment, and my questions as creative tools.
Through this image, I’m not trying to impose a meaning, but to invite others to look differently, to question what’s been established, and to imagine new ways of representing the feminine, the spiritual, and the ancestral.
