Introduction
A drawing of,
Demetra of Lesvos
R.I.P. you beautiful soul
Demetra of Lesvos—born Dimitris Karagiannis—was not a public figure, a politician, or a celebrity.
Yet her life became a quiet act of resistance and a mirror to the society that rejected her.
To many in Greece’s LGBTQ+ community, she is a symbol.
Of survival. Of authenticity. Of quiet dignity in a world that gave her none.
She was born and raised in a small village on the island of Lesvos, a place drenched in sunlight and tradition, where every deviation from the norm became cause for gossip.
At 14, she confided in her parents the truth of her identity—that she was a girl.
Her reward for honesty was exile: they sent her to a psychiatric hospital, as if her soul could be “cured” of its truth.
When she could no longer survive in the suffocating arms of rural judgment, she fled to Athens. There, she became one of the many unseen—living homeless for at least five years.
But even in hardship, her longing remained deeply human: she dreamed of building a family.
That dream stayed with her, even when the world made no space for it.
In later years, she returned to Lesvos.
But her homecoming was met not with warmth, but with whispers behind curtains and stares in the streets.
She never stopped identifying as a woman—but that honesty cost her everything in a place where conformity is comfort.
After her mother’s death, Demetra did something small, and revolutionary:
she stepped out of the house wearing a dress.
That simple act shattered the illusion the village had clung to.
The ridicule grew sharper. Her isolation more complete.
And then, silence.
At 65, Demetra disappeared. No one looked for her—until a week later, when her body was found beside the road, a victim of a fatal hit-and-run.
Abandoned in death, just as she had been in life.
***
Once, someone asked her:
“Do you feel like a man or a woman?”
Her answer was as simple as it was profound:
“A woman. And my name is Dimitris. What should I say—Demetra? It changes nothing. A rose, by any name, is still a rose.”
Demetra lived a life many ignored, mocked, or misunderstood.
But in her quiet defiance, in her unwavering truth, she gave voice to those too afraid to speak.
She was a rose in a cracked vase, still blooming, still beautiful—no matter what name you gave her.

Supplies
Liquid ink & acrylics
Fabric used as canvas

Inspiration picture
First, I chose the image of Demetra that I felt was the most representative. I really loved the way the light falls on her hair and how gentle she looks. Also, the light-colored blouse combined with the pearls, I think, creates a beautiful frame around her

Quick sketch
Second, created a quick sketch using ink and watercolors to study the composition and placement.

Realism was never my priority
I wasn’t so concerned with achieving realism or perfect detail. What mattered to me was capturing her gaze—so piercing, yet so gentle—and the feeling of fallen grace that surrounded her.

The bag
Dimitra of Lesbos, surrounded by the colors she deserved!
"She sings and dreams, wears colourful clothes, opens her home to strangers and locals alike, and is subjected to their hatred and mockery".
