A book cover is a canvas where a dialogue between author and reader takes place. Faride Mereb, book designer and founder of publishing house Letra Muerta, experiments with handcrafted and digital processes to create striking, eclectic book covers. She’s a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York City, and has won multiple awards in Latin America, Europe, and the US.

This course is ideal for artists, designers, writers, or anyone who wants to design and create an original book cover.
Requirements and materials
Some experience using Adobe Illustrator or InDesign is recommended but not obligatory.
To take this course, you need access to either of the above-mentioned design programs, or similar. Other optional, but recommended, materials include paper, a ruler, pencils, a measuring tape, a craft knife or scissors, and a cutting mat.

A course by Faride Mereb
Faride Mereb, born in Venezuela and now living in New York City, is an award-winning book designer and editor. As a teenager, Faride worked for a newspaper and soon developed an interest for typography. She was also a library assistant at school, and was struck by the cover of the first book she bought, 12 Cuentos Peregrinos by Gabriel Garcia. These were the foundations of her strong connection to books and printed material. She studied Graphic Design at university, and is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University.

In 2014, Faride founded the publishing house, Letra Muerta, where she has published eight titles to date. She has won multiple awards in Latin America, Europe, and the US, including winning in both categories for AIGA Awards' 50 Books, and 50 Book Covers. She was also awarded gold in the editorial category in the Latin American Design Awards. Faride is a member of the American Printing History Association, The Bibliographical Society of America, and Center for Book Arts, and has collaborated with numerous companies such as Penguin Random, and Ugly Duckling Presse. When not working with her publishing house, Faride also teaches at the Center for Book Arts.

Skillful and experienced teacher. Be aware that there is no lesson about lettering and the art of making typo yourself or create fantasy-like gradients with lighting effects on the title. As this was not what I was looking for, I unfortunately do not recommend this course. But if you have the budget to buy your desired lettering from a designer it is surely a great course.

PlusLove this course. The teacher has a really good design style and is interested in making beautiful things with integrity. It is a very thorough step by step course - helpful because I have a book cover assignment in a graphic design course that hasn’t covered any of the material here. Looking forward to making an exceptional book cover
